Capsule Geology

The Mo (Win 1) occurrence is located on a north-northwest–trending ridge, southwest of the Nahwitti River and approximately 4.3 kilometres northwest of the western end of Nahwitti Lake.

Regionally, the area is underlain by northwest-trending belts of basaltic volcanics and carbonate sedimentary rocks of the Upper Triassic Karmutsen Quatsino formations (Vancouver Group) and mafic volcanics and sediments of the Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic Bonanza Group (Holberg volcanic unit, Nahwitti River wacke and Parson Bay Formation). The Karmutsen Formation consists of amygdaloidal andesites and basalts that are overlain by northwest-trending Quatsino Formation limestone. The Bonanza Group volcanics, comprised of andesitic sills and rhyolite, are intercalated with sediments (argillites). These rocks have been intruded by granodioritic rocks of the Early to Middle Jurassic Island Plutonic Suite.

Locally, the Bonanza Group rocks show silicification and pyritization. Skarn is found within the limestone, showing compositional changes from epidote-garnet to garnet-amphibolite to amphibolite skarn. Disseminated and massive sphalerite and disseminated galena carrying silver values are found within the skarn. Lenses of magnetite are present in one locality. Mapping and trenching have outlined the skarn zone lying in an area 210 by 30 metres, trending west-northwest (280 degrees) and dipping moderately (45 degrees) south.

In 1972, a grab sample of mineralized skarn assayed 3.5 per cent zinc (Assessment Report 4251).

In 1975, chip samples from trench 2 assayed 6.02 per cent zinc, 0.04 per cent lead and 4.8 grams per tonne silver over 4.9 metres and 3.97 per cent zinc, 0.28 per cent lead and 4.1 grams per tonne silver over 2.4 metres; trench 3 yielded 6.02 per cent zinc over 4.9 metres and a sample from trench 4 assayed 5.40 per cent zinc (Assessment Report 5758).

In 1989, chip samples from the skarn zone yielded up to 8.59 per cent zinc with 0.22 per cent copper over 1.5 metres and 3.60 per cent zinc with 1.99 grams per tonne gold over 1.0 metre (Assessment Report 19769).

In 1991, drillhole W91-1 intersected 4.88 metres averaging 8.7 per cent zinc (Assessment Report 22244).

Another zone of mineralization, located approximately 400 metres east of the skarn zone, consists of a semi-massive sulphide vein, up to 1.5 metres wide, occurring within the margin of a diorite plug. The vein strikes northeast 010 to 050 degrees, dips southeast at 50 to 60 degrees and has been offset laterally by 20 metres along a northwest-trending fault. A second quartz-veined zone is reported approximately 500 metres south of the skarn zone and is comprised of banded quartz-amethyst with trace disseminated pyrite cut by magnetite veining adjacent to a mafic dike.

In 1989, sampling of the semi-massive sulphide vein yielded 10.80 per cent zinc, 0.93 per cent copper, 0.36 per cent lead, 15.60 grams per tonne silver and 0.137 gram per tonne gold over 1.5 metres, whereas samples from the quartz-amethyst veins yielded up to 0.150 gram per tonne gold (Assessment Report 19769).

In 1966, Giant Explorations Ltd. completed a program of geological mapping and geochemical sampling on the area as the HPH claims. During 1968 through 1976, Acheron Resources completed intermittent programs of geochemical and geophysical surveys, hand trenching and geological mapping on the area as the TI, Mo, Mon and Bud claims.

In 1983 and 1984, Trawler Petroleum Explorations Ltd. completed programs of rock and soil sampling and geological mapping on the area as the Stump claim. In 1989, Mishibishu Gold Corp. completed a program of geological mapping and geochemical sampling on the area as the Win 1 claim. Also at this time, Essex Resources Corp. completed a program of geochemical sampling, geological mapping, 17.5 line-kilometres of ground geophysical surveys and trenching on the area.

In 1991 and 1992, Great Western Gold Corp. completed a program of line cutting, 7.5 line-kilometres of combined ground geophysical surveys and six diamond drill holes, totalling 502.3 metres, on the area.
